Interview with Doña Auxiliadora Sánchez Redondo

Auxi Sánchez is a tutor for the 1st year of Primary Education, a Mathematics and Language teacher in the first cycle and a specialist in Early Childhood Education.

"It is a pleasure to work with my children, using different techniques and methodologies."

1. Why did you decide to study Teaching?

– I studied Teaching in part because I come from a family where there are teachers. Specifically, I have three relatives who have practiced this profession. In addition, I have lived in an environment in which this profession has been highly valued, I saw that they talked about children, how much fun they had, how rewarding this job was and perhaps that is why I have liked it since I was little this profession. And the truth is that I am very glad that I chose it.

2. How do you think your life would be today if you had not studied Teaching?

– Well, the truth is that I have never considered it, because since I was little, as I have told you, I felt a vocation for teaching, even if it was due to family influence, so other possible professions have never crossed my mind. And I think I'm right in saying that I was right, because I feel very fulfilled doing my job.

3. How many years have you been teaching?

– I have been here for 34 years, (thoughtful). How time flies... The truth is that I really enjoy it and I love it.

4. We know that you are one of the oldest teachers at the school, how many years have you been in it?

– With this course I have been at the Alborán College for 32 years, I have been here since it was inaugurated and, therefore, I am one of the oldest people that we continue to work with at this time. But not one of the biggest (jokes, smiling).

5. What do you like most about school?

– There are many things I like about Colegio Alborán. One of them, to name just a few, is that it is a very familiar and close school.
In addition, we get along very well with all our colleagues, and that creates a very good work environment, which is a fundamental requirement that is passed on to students and parents.
The natural environment is also spectacular, our center is in a privileged setting, with lots of grass, trees, horses, very good facilities in general. And on top of that the food is very good (laughs). What more could you want?

6. Have you noticed much of a difference between teaching classes in Early Childhood Education and doing so in Primary?

– The truth is that at first, yes, because I was used to working in Early Childhood Education, in any of the three courses, which is where I have been for 28 years, and I missed the little ones and their work methodology a lot. But in Primary Education I am also very happy and work with the same motivation and enthusiasm.
In Preschool children are more dependent on the teacher, while in Primary they are more autonomous and do not depend so much on him. But in both, the children are very affectionate and it is a pleasure to work with them with different techniques and methodologies.

7. Do you consider that the work of a teacher is important?

– A lot, in any of the educational stages this work is fundamental, since we are training the people of the future. Because apart from learning the content itself, we teach them to fend for themselves, and a series of fundamental values for their correct integral formation and, what is more important, for their lives.

8. Have you worked in any other school apart from Alborán?

– Yes, previously I was working in a nursery here in Marbella and also in another nursery in Ronda, my hometown.

9. Do you think that working through projects is beneficial for students?

– Of course, I consider that working through projects has many advantages. And that is why we work in this school like this. On the one hand, it motivates students to learn, something essential. On the other hand, it develops their autonomy and encourages their self-critical spirit. In addition, it reinforces their social skills through the exchange of ideas and collaboration and facilitates their literacy. And lastly, and to summarize, it also promotes creativity and in turn involves parents in working with their children. This involvement of parents with their children is very beneficial in the teaching-learning process.

10. What is your favorite hobby?

– The truth is that I really like reading, so I spend a lot of time between books. I read for pleasure and I also read books and stories from which I can get a school performance and extrapolate it to my classes. Likewise, I am a music lover. I like different genres, but what I listen to most often is bachata (laughing) because of my son, who spends the whole day wearing it.
