Conference on Gothic Literature by Doña Sara Roma. 2016-17

On the occasion of the celebration of the day of Halloween visited our school Mrs. Sara Rome, Graduate and PhD in Audiovisual Communication, to give a lecture to 4th ESO and Baccalaureate students on Gothic Literature.

Mrs. Sara Roma is currently dedicated to literary criticism and teaching, combining two different but complementary approaches to Literature, such as Creative writing and reading promotion workshop (for youth and adults) called "The Letter with Art enters" and the literary gatherings that he coordinates.

It began with a comprehensive explanation of the historical context of the Romanticism and he insisted during his interesting conference on the importance of reading a book and knowing how to debate, talk about reading, draw conclusions and give our opinion.

Likewise, he spoke to young people about the background and aesthetics of the Gothic novel, connecting with the symbols related to this theme. The students especially loved the way of approaching the subject of horror stories and their characters, as well as its relationship with those of other literary currents.

Expert in classic horror films, she screened the short film Tim Burton's "Vincent" (homage to Vincent Price) that includes many of the gothic elements mentioned in his talk.

He encouraged the students who attended to read a book and "not just stay on the surface of the story, whether we like it or not, but know how to delve into other levels of literature, so we learn to be critical and find creative beauty."

In a participatory environment, he toured different authors (such as Goethe, Allan Poe, Hoffman, Stevenson, Guy de Maupassant, Vladimir Propp, Conan Doyle o Bram Stoker, to name a few) and its connection with the primordial elements.

On October 31 at the Colegio Alborán we traveled to June 1816, to Villa Diodati, to meet Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley and John Polidori.
