Interview with Mr. Pablo Luna Martín

Teacher of Mathematics in ESO, Physics and Chemistry in 2nd year of High School and Physics in 2nd year of High School and tutor of 4th year of ESO.

"I enjoy being a teacher, it is incredible to see the progress and evolution of the students, it is a really exciting profession"

Sofía: 1.- Mathematics is a subject that few of us like (I speak for myself). How do you motivate the students who like this subject the least?
Pablo: In the first place, trying to make the class a little more fun and have relaxed moments with the students, which makes the teachers connect with the students.
I have had students who did not like math at all and in the end they have enjoyed it.
On the other hand, it is very important, and the school is committed to it, to carry out cooperative work, projects, more playful activities, etc.

Sofía: 2.- What hobbies do you have?
Pablo: I like sports in general, and I enjoy doing sports, which happens that right now I don't have much time to practice them due to recent paternity. If I have to highlight a few, I prefer football, paddle tennis and watching sports on television, for example, I like Formula 1 a lot.
I love playing paddle tennis at school, against ESO students, we laugh a lot and create a healthy competitiveness.

Sofía: 3.- Have you always been clear about the profession you wanted to practice?
Pablo: Not always, but since I was little, in the 4th or 5th year of EGB I have liked the role of teacher, in fact I used to finish class tasks early and then I would put myself together with other classmates who had some difficulties to finish theirs. I enjoy being a teacher, it is incredible to see the progress and evolution of the students, it is a truly exciting profession. Also, I like being a tutor, I empathize even more with them.

Sofía: 4.- What subject do you teach? Which do you like to teach the most?
Pablo: I teach Mathematics throughout the ESO, Physics and Chemistry in the 2nd year of ESO and Physics in the 2nd year of Baccalaureate.
I like them all and in all courses. Each course is different each year, there are no equal or similar classes, but unique students.
Perhaps I enjoy 2nd year Physics more, because the students are already more responsible, they are really interested and they have a clear objective in mind, which is their near future at the University. In this way, students are more involved in the work of the subject and it facilitates the work. But again, I like them all.

Sofía: 5.- How many years have you been working here?
Pablo: I have been working at Colegio Alborán for four years, and I hope to continue for many more. I am really very comfortable in this center both for the classmates and for the students. The work environment is fantastic.

Sofía: 6.- What do you like most about teaching?
Pablo: There are many things that I like, but perhaps the most exciting thing, as I have already said, is seeing the evolution of the students, not only on an academic level but also on a personal level. In my case, I teach from 1st year of ESO to 2nd year of Baccalaureate, I see all the evolution from when they are children until we say goodbye to them as men and women.

Sofía: 7.- You have just become a father, how has this new stage changed your life? Would you like to increase the family?
Pablo: Yes, my life has totally changed, apart from sleeping little, you practically don't have time for anything, it's like that, but it's an exciting project for the future.
Yes, I would like to expand the family, at least with a second child.

Sofía: 8.- Do you think that being a father can change your relationship with the students?
Pablo: Maybe yes, even if we don't realize it, everything affects us. But working with teen and pre-teen students may change me more as my son approaches that age. In any case, my relationship with the students has always been very good and close.

Sofía: 9.- What do you feel when you see your students leave for the University after having taught them?
Pablo: Well, it's hard to explain... On the one hand, joy and pride, we are really excited to witness its evolution, knowing that we have been part of it. But on the other hand, longing, every year is the same, we become very fond of them, each course is special and we get a little sad when we say goodbye. Very important bonds are created with them after so many years.

Sofía: 10.- Do you think that being a tutor is the same as a course teacher?
Pablo: It is not the same, being a tutor implies much more connection and involvement with the students. In addition to preparing and teaching your classes, creating and reinventing new methodologies to try to make them learn more and at the same time be enjoyable, a more personal relationship unites you. You really become a link, an intermediary with the rest of the teachers and with the parents, it is a much more complete experience in all senses, more sacrificed; but, on the other hand, more rewarding.
