Visit the Costal del Sol Hospital. 1st and 2nd year of Health Baccalaureate. 2021-22

Our students from the Health Sciences Baccalaureate participated yesterday in an interesting visit to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. During the meeting, organized by the Department of Sciences, our students were guided at all times by professionals who carry out their work in these facilities.

After the cordial reception by Dr. Francisco Fernández (digestive specialist) and Dr. Nuria Fernández, they began the activity in the Radiodiagnosis and Nuclear Medicine Service, where Javier Gutiérrez and Jesús Rodríguez (coordinator) informed them about the provision of the service , the staff that work there and the volume of daily patients that they can attend to.

Subsequently, they had a talk with Dr. Pablo Valdés (Head of Service) about what the radiodiagnostic service is, what its function is and the importance of carrying out this type of test to offer diagnosis and treatment to patients . He also valued the human side of service professionals and the importance of both informing and caring for the patient in a close and friendly way. This made it extensible to other professions where quality and human treatment are essential.

The visit to the Radiodiagnosis Service began, guided by Jesús Rodríguez (coordinator), who showed them the equipment used to perform different diagnostic tests: digital x-rays, mammograms, CT scans and nuclear magnetic resonance, as well as how it works.

Next, Dr. Fernando Fernández (responsible for Microbiology) guided them through the microbiology laboratory, starting with bacteriology (sampling, classification, sowing and culture media, antibiograms, staining). The students did a practice that consisted of taking a sample of bacterial flora from their unwashed hands and another after washing them according to the laboratory procedure. It continued with the section dedicated to fungi, parasites and STDs, where both macroscopic and microscopic identification of samples were carried out. They finished with molecular microbiology, where in addition to Covid detection procedures, they learned about other PCR applications.

At 13:XNUMX p.m., María Luisa Hortas (from Assisted Reproduction) was in charge of showing the clinical analysis department, where the entire blood sample analysis process is completely automated, from its classification, through its processing and ending with the Obtaining results that are delivered to physicians for diagnosis. She also visited the emergency laboratory, where the operation is somewhat different due to the demand for the service they cover, where faster diagnoses must be made. Lastly, she explained the work of the assisted reproduction section of which she is a part.

For our students it has been a privilege and a unique experience to learn from the inside how these services work. From Colegio Alborán we want to thank the entire Costa del Sol Hospital and especially the professionals who have treated us so kindly and who have made this enriching activity possible.
